Gloss:
This is the Sharps New Model 1863, straight breech, breech-loading single shot rifle. It was manufactured 1863-1865; about 6000 were made. These straight breech models were a definite improvement over the earlier slant breech types and are the most common of the Sharps rifles and carbines, accounting for about 65% of total production. This model saw extensive use in the Civil War among Union forces.
