Gloss:
This Sharps Model "1870", alteration infantry rifle was converted from percussion to metallic cartridge in 1870-1873. Approximately 1300 were manufactured using both new and old production parts. Much of the production was carried out at the Springfield Armory in concert with the Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Company. The piece differs from earlier Sharps infantry rifles in having only a two-band-fastened barrel and several parts finished bright.
