This U.S. Model 1898 Springfield/Krag-Jorgensen rifle was manufactured from 1898 to 1903; approximately 330,000 were produced. The "Krag" rifle was invented by Ole H. Krag and Erik Jorgensen at the Kongsberg Arms Factory in Norway. The design was adopted by the U.S. Military in 1892 to supercede the breech-loading single shot Springfield "trapdoor" rifle. The "Krag" was the first small caliber, smokeless powder magazine rifle adopted by the U.S.
RECEIVER: U.S./MODEL 1898 AND SPRINGFIELD ARMORY.
5 shot bolt action repeater. One-piece walnut stock with separate walnut handguard. Fiar condition with lots of nicks and scratches. Receiver case hardened, all other metal blued. Heavy finish wear loading gate, sideplate and barrel bands. All metal has at least one small patch of pitting.2 barrel bands screw and stud retained. Front band has stacking swivel. Blade front sight in high lug, M1902 (1st type) adjustable rear sight. Rear sling swivel on buttstock. Note: 3-piece cleaning rod and oiler in buttstock cavity.
