Gloss:
This Model 1861 "Special" rifle-musket was designed by Colt's on the Enfield rifle pattern and was made under contract, 1861-1865. Although similar to the regular U.S. Model 1861, the Colt differs in the hammer and lockplate configurations. Between 75,000 and 100,000 arms of this type were produced by Colt's during the Civil War. The "Special" Model 1861 was also manufactured on contract by the Amoskeag Manufacturing Co. and E.G. Lamson and Co.; approximately 152,000 were produced in total.
