This example is typical of the wheel-lock rifles used in the American Colonies of the 17th century. It was used for hunting deer. The wheel-lock mechanism was too complicated and expensive for general use in Colonial America. It was not typically a military weapon and was introduced into the Colonies in only limited numbers as compared to the matchlock and flintlock ignition systems.
