Authorization for the development of a new bolt action repeating rifle with a detachable box magazine was given on May 31, 1944. This model was to be developed as a sort of a Junior Winchester Model 70, to handle the 218 Bee, 22 Hornet, 25-20 Winchester, and 32-20 Winchester cartridges. Factory records show the first delivery of M/43 rifles to warehouse stock on February 4, 1949. The Model 43 was the first postwar development in Winchester center fire rifles. It embodied the well-proven principles of the famous smooth, fast Winchester bolt action that adapted it to that highly popular sport known as pest and small game shooting. Discontinued in 1957, about 62,617 were made (Watrous: 1966). The right side of this Model 43 is completely cut away from the wrist to the rear sight, exposing the bolt and trigger mechanism and magazine arrangement. A sample cartridge is in the chamber. |
