Bierstadt loaned this painting and four others to the White House and tried to convince Congress to purchase them for the President's residence. Although Bierstadt was not successful in selling his paintings to the government, his work inspired President Chester A. Arthur to travel to Yellowstone National Park in 1883 to see the natural wonders.
