Leigh accompanied Cody guides Fred Richard and Ned Frost on a bear hunt to obtain a specimen for a Colorado museum. Their hunting dogs cornered a grizzly and in the excitement Fred Richard fell. Although the bear did not harm Richard, it gave Leigh the idea to include a fallen hunter in his painting.
