Bert Phillips met Joseph H. Sharp and Ernest Blumenshein while studying art in Paris. Sharp told tales of an intriquing lifestyle in New Mexico, where Phillips and Blumenschein later traveled in a wagon. When a wheel broke near Taos, Phillips settled there and became founder of the Taos art colony.
