The summer of 1988 is remembered in Yellowstone National Park for the extensive forest fires, which engendered controversy over the Park Service's policies. Christie's painting captures a peaceful moment in Lamar Valley before the fires have spread. The casual observer, like the calmly grazing buffalo, may not recognize the significance of the billowing smoke clouds in the distance.
