Gloss:
A California landscape painter, Stuart spent several seasons in Yellowstone. In his diary for 1886 he wrote: "I was chatting to tourists about paintings most of the day but made no sales." For the date inscribed on this painting, his journal entry read: "I brought in my dawn sketch Looking Down the Canyon. It was snowing all day therefore could not work outside. I wrote several letters."
