Dress and Adornment - Status Symbols and Insignia of Office. Fur trade medal - round medal made of pewter; bust of President Martin Van Buren; crossed tomahawk and pipe with shaking hands on back; medal attached to string of brass beads. Remarks: Pierre Chouteau Jr. + Co., Upper Missouri Outfit 1843. Medal made for some unknown company operating in the Missouri territory at this period. Only four medals like this are known.
