Preparing for the Medicine Sweat
Gift in memory of Charles Dean Cook
In a letter describing a similar painting, Sharp told of the ritual surrounding the sweat tipi. He wrote that the men "carry the hot stones in little teepees, close entrance & men strip, pour water on hot stones & have regular steam bath--then go out & jump in river or rub snow on! It is for ceremonial for cleanliness, also to help conquer col(d)s etc."
