Greatly affected by his wife's death in 1899, Moran painted emotionally charged landscapes in the following years. He made several trips to Laguna and Acoma in New Mexico, drawn by the beauty of the Indian villages. Dramatic contrasts of light and dark in this painting produce a romantic view of Laguna.
