Gloss:
Swiss artist Karl Bodmer accompanied Prince Maximilian of Wied on a trip up the Missouri River in 1833-1834. Along the way Bodmer made watercolors that he later had published as engravings. His prints made extensive use of the aquatint, a variety of etching which uses a powdered resin to create a tonal effect in the print.
