Inspired by the French artist Gustave Courbet's monumental work Burial at Ornans (1850), Jackson sought to bring the emotions and sensibilities evoked by Courbet to life in a western context. Jackson saw many similarities between the sturdy, independent peasants of the plains of France and the men of the West. Cowboy songs about life and death also inspired the artist.
