Jackson painted The Trail Driver at the Pitchfork Ranch in Meeteetse, Wyoming. During a trip to Europe he was inspired by the portraits of nobility by artists such as Diego Velazquez of Spain. Jackson wanted to celebrate the American cowboy with a similar heroic vision.
