By working in oil Bierstadt was able to do color sketches as he traveled, using the portable support of paper. He applied the paint thinly, leaving brushstrokes apparent, especially in the sky. Because paper is not a strong support for the heavy medium of oil, sketches like this are often later mounted on a heavier board.
