Dress and Adornment - Status Symbols and Insignia of Office. War bonnet - made on a tan felt hat crown; 21 eagle feathers around crown with yellow-dyed hair at tips, gray and white breath feathers at bases, rawhide loops at bases of feathers overwrapped with red flannel tied top and bottom with heavy white thread, center front feather wrapping has 3 small copper or brass disks sewn to it, crown feathers are connected to each other with a leather thong through the shaft of each feather about 1/4 of the way from the bottom; beaded front band on leather strip, lazy-stitch beaded with 3 stepped triangles in clear cut red, light blue and dark blue cut beads on white ground with small squares of clear red and dark blue cut beads, ends of band trimmed with dark blue cut and red/white hearts beads, row of small copper or brass disks at bottom of bead strip with outside border of light blue and clear red cut beads, all seed beads; hat trimmed at sides with trailers of yellow, red, teal and orange silk ribbons, red and plain leather ties; crown of hat has a single spike with breath feathers sinew wrapped on and a dark brown animal tail tied on; single red cotton cloth trailer attached at back of hat and split into two tails at mid-point, 2 rows of 23 eagle feathers with yellow-dyed hair orange-dyed horsehair at tips and gray and white breath feathers at bases, rawhide loops at bases of feathers overwrapped with red wool tradecloth tied top and bottom with heavy white thread, feathers are attached to trailer with long leather thongs and to each other in each row with a long leather thong through the shaft of each feather; 2 leather thong ties at mid-point of trailer; bottoms of tails trimmed with blue cloth binding.
