Defibaugh, a New York artist, created this series of work after visiting Yellowstone National park and learning of the 2,700 bison that dies in the park in 1996. The artwork uses the lyrics to "Home on the Range: as a background for the Buffalo. The combination of image and text adds a certain element of humor, yet the work touches on a so much more - western politics, land ownership, and wildlife management. In addition, stylistically, the painting is a unique and contemporary portrayal of a bison. This artwork adds greatly to the contemporary side of the Whitney collection.
