Moran first traveled to the Grand Canyon in 1873, just two years after his career-launching trip to Yellowstone. He accepted the invitation of Major John Wesley Powell to accompany his survey of the Colorado River. The geological mystery, splendid colors and transforming atmospheric effects brought the artist back many times.
